College of staten island beat bard in opener, 75-48

College of Staten Island/McCown HS christened its new gym in New Springville by winning its season opener 75-48 over Bard HS Wednesday night.

Coach Ray Palma won in his first game as varsity coach as Bernard Jones scored 20 points, Amir Archer netted 19 and Chris Frank chipped in with 17 in the non-league affair.

"It feels great, but for the kids," said Palma. "We had great support, with faculty, staff and parents in a packed house. We wanted to have a Thanksgiving-Eve type of experience."

A 24-6 third-quarter run put things away against the Manhattan school.

"Jones got us going early with 15 points in the first half," said Palma. "He played good all-around and got buckets to stem the tide when Bard made runs. Archer got us going at both ends, and freshman (point guard) Chris Frank had 12 points in the second half. He's going to be a special player."
